Yeah, this story is as crazy as it sounds.
It started when Julio Nivelo pulled off the ultimate heist in NYC when he stole a 100-pound bucket of gold and got away with it (for the most part).
He was able to cut chunks of the gold up and exchange them for $1.2 million on the black market, leaving the money behind with his then fiance while he went further and further south.
NYPD was on to him though, putting up wanted posters and detectives on the case were out to find him.
He paid a friend to drive him from Miami to LA, then making stops in places like Tijuana before walking over the border from Peru to Ecuador where he is still currently hiding.
He ended up spending a year in an Ecuadorian jail after they worked with NYPD and his fiance left him but the money is still out there and there is actually a $100,000 reward for the money's return.
Sounds like he's got it made as long as he finds his no-good ex!
