It was big breaking news yesterday when, after an emergency court hearing in Chicago, the charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped by prosecution.
This whole mess started basically when Smollett orchestrated a phony hate crime in order to get a raise for his work on the show Empire.
The lead prosecutor on the case decided to drop the 16 charges of disorderly conduct and filing a false police report after Smollett paid 10% ($10,000) of his $100,000 bond and did some community service.
Prosecutor, Joe Magats, still says he does not believe Smollett is innocent and dropping the charges in no way vindicates him.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago PD Superintendent Eddie Johnson are pissed, though!
Emanuel called it a “whitewash of justice” while Johnson is suspicious the prosecution brokered a deal with Smollett and his team.
Smollett may be out of the hot water in Chicago but he still could face federal charges depending on the outcome of FBI and U.S. Postal Service investigations.
