The Gatorade Bath
Posted by Free Beer on January 12 2010
I think I agree with Jim Rome when he says the Gatorade bath for coaches winning football games is a bit played out. Not every time it happens, but most I suppose. But there are times I still get a kick out of it. An underdog wins a game no one thought they would. Maybe, a team completes a long difficult grind to a championship, the culmination of months or years of hard work and sacrifice. And, its always perfect when a team caps a 7-6 college football season. Wait. Not so much on the last one.

But that's not the point of this blog. Ultimately, I don't really care if there is a Gatorade bath for every coach after every bowl game. In fact, I think there was. There certainly was in every game I watched. What amazes me, however, is how every coach seemingly continues to be surprised by it happening. Are they faking it? Maybe they are since they know the players like it.

I was at the MAC Championship game between our alma mater CMU, and the Bobcats of Ohio. Late in the game, Ohio turned it over on downs, and at that point it was obvious to all of the 40,000 in attendance that the game was essentially over. And also obvious to everyone, was that the CMU seniors were plotting to dump Gatorade on Butch Jones. That is, to everyone but Butch Jones. Now I have great respect for Butch for what he did for the program. And many of the other coaches who had this happen to them are brilliant men when it comes to football and the men they coach. They catch, appraise, and study every nuance of behavior, tactics, and strategy regarding football. But when it comes to staying dry at the end, their brains are always calling for a fair catch!

I don't get it. Look over your shoulder once in a while. Only 8 months until the next bath for some of you.
